Red Metal Radio Show

Red Metal Radio Show

Calumet Theatre

Thursday, June 20

3:30 PM

The Red Metal Radio Show is an annual live radio broadcast from the historic Calumet Theatre in Calumet, MI. For the most part, the show is written and produced by Oren Tikkanen, who is also the host. The RMRS always focuses on some aspect of Copper Country heritage and history, and past show titles include “A Walk around Calumet in 1909,” “Take Your Ears for a Ride--Copper Country Streetcars in 1910,” “The Keweenaw According to Mac--the Writings of Mac Frimodig,” and “The Joke Show--Yooper Humor.”

This year, the theme is “The Strike,” a simulation of how it might have been if radio news coverage had been available during the bitter 1913–14 Michigan Copper Strike. Real-life radio newsmen Dick Storm and Todd Van Dyke will be “in the field,” interviewing the protagonists in this dramatic historical event, with Tikkanen acting as “news anchor,” and RMRS veteran Kris Kyro Johnson playing the part of historical consultant and fact-checker Professor Bea Wright.

As part of Calumet Day for FinnFest USA 2013, a non-broadcast stage version of the show will be presented at the Calumet Theatre at 3:30 PM on June 20, 2013. As with all RMRS productions, the show will be presented as “live radio,” with very little stage movement, and the audience will be invited to let the voices and sounds of 100 years ago take them back to 1913, as it “might have been.”

The 1913 Strike was not essentially a Finnish event, but it was of particular importance in the Finnish immigrant community. The strike caused dissension and sometimes violence between various factions of American Finns--and echos of it are still heard 100 years later.

The “Red Metal Radio Show--The Strike” is recommended for all Finn Fest 2013 attendees who have interests in immigrant history, labor history, Keweenaw history--or who just like a good story. To purchase tickets, call the Calumet Theatre box office at (906) 337-2610.
