In addition to the programming available only to Education Forum registrants, our presenters will offer the following sessions open to all FinnFest attendees.

Finnish Teaching Methods in Practice 

Presenters: Ilona Leimu, Anne Shadrick, Ulla Tervo-Desnick and Tuula Scheinin
Moderators: Philip Johnson and Sharon Franklin Rahkonen
Teachers from Finland and US-based teachers using Finnish methods will describe the innovative educational strategies used in elementary classrooms. The session will describe Finland’s school structure, schedule, and curriculum. Interactive demonstrations of creative learning strategies including art, music and science will be incorporated. A special video presentation will feature Finnish children describing what they like about school and learning.

High School and Beyond

Educators from Finland will describe the lifelong educational streams Finland has designed to enable students to thrive in their chosen fields. The differences between the universities of applied sciences focused on the development of a highly skilled workforce for the region and the academic university approach to higher education will be discussed. The Ministry of Education’s approach to individual student assessment processes, teacher education and the internationalization of Finnish education will also be described.
